Iran Press News: The students committee on human rights reporters in Iran reports that in the past few days half of the detainees of the Saturday, October 7th riots in Tehran have been freed from Evin prison. After their release many of those who had played no role in the clashes and were only there as on-looker and were arrested anyway, reported on the brutal treatment of the detainees, the lack of food and hygienic conditions and the general suffering of all those being held.
Another report from Evin prison indicates that one of those arrested during the unrest, died at 3:30 pm on Tuesday, October 10th in the infirmary of ward 209 due to injuries sustained under torture.
More than a week has passed since the arrest of Ayatollah Kazemeini-Boroujerdi and his supporters and there is still no word on the status of activist and blogger Kianoosh Sanjari who was among those rounded up during the sweep of arrests. There are rumors that on Friday, October 13th, due to severe injuries from torture under interrogation he had been transferred to the prison infirmary. This is while REHSAWLAT newspaper, an official regime publication, in one of its sections, reporting on the October 7th unrest wrote: "One of the authors of the [Saturday night unrest] is expert agitator Kianoosh Sanjari; he was also involved in the July 1999 student uprising. Sanjari has also been arrested."
Informed sources said that the fact that Rehsawlat newspaper mentioned Sanjari’s arrest is a certain indication that in fact the ministry of intelligence and security was trumping up a case against this esteemed activist and blogger.
The students committee of human rights reporters hereby expresses it’s deep concern over the torture and persecution of those arrested during the October 7th clashes and demands total clarification on the status of the detainees and the court cases being filed on each and everyone of them. The committee also is concerned about Kianoosh Sanjari’s detention status. We call upon all international human rights institutions and defenders to assist in addressing the awful conditions of the detainees in the infamous Evin prison.
